Thermal Label Core Size and Roll Diameter Explained

By the Label Mark-It team · Updated

Short answer: The core is the cardboard tube in the middle of a label roll, and its inside diameter has to fit the printer's spindle. The outside diameter (OD) is the full width of the roll, and it has to fit inside the printer. Desktop printers often take 1 inch cores; industrial printers often take 3 inch cores. Measure before you order.

Measure the core

Measure the inside of the cardboard tube from edge to edge. That's the core size.

Measure the outside diameter

Measure across the whole roll through the center. That's the OD. The printer's manual lists the maximum.

Desktop vs industrial

  • Desktop printers usually take smaller cores and smaller rolls.
  • Industrial printers take bigger cores and much bigger rolls.
  • Bigger rolls mean fewer changeovers on busy lines.

Wound in or out

Labels can face in or out on the roll. Some printers care. Check the manual or ask us.
