Tags vs Labels: Which One Fits the Job?

By the Label Mark-It team · Updated

Short answer: Use a label when the info should stick to the product or box. Use a tag when it can't or shouldn't stick: clothing, hanging goods, or anything where adhesive would damage the item. Both can be printed on thermal printers.

When labels win

  • Boxes and shipping cartons.
  • Shelf and product packaging.
  • Inventory and bin labels.

When tags win

  • Apparel and textiles.
  • Items that hang or get attached by string or fastener.
  • Surfaces where adhesive would leave residue.

Thermal tags

Tag stock is thicker and has no adhesive. Many thermal printers handle it fine. We make thermal labels and tags.
